Applications Now Open: 2026/2027 Emerging Artist Program
Edmonton Opera is pleased to invite applications for the 2026/2027 Emerging Artist Program. This paid professional development opportunity is designed for early-career singers seeking meaningful performance experience, community engagement, and insight into the workings of a leading Canadian opera company.
Two (2) Emerging Artists will be selected to participate in program activities across the 2026/2027 season, including residencies in the Yukon and in Edmonton, Alberta, as well as additional outreach opportunities.
The 2026/2027 Emerging Artist Program is in proud collaboration with the Yukon Arts Centre.
Program Overview
1. Dawson City Summer Residency
July 9–21, 2026 | Dawson City, Yukon
The Dawson City Summer Residency is the northern residency component of Edmonton Opera’s Emerging Artist Program. This immersive experience offers paid professional work, community engagement, and experiential learning in a unique cultural context.
This residency will focus on allowing Emerging Artists to expand how and where they perform. Participants will gain hands-on experience in non-traditional performance settings, developing adaptability, confidence, and practical performance skills. As much early-career training occurs in urban and formal environments, this residency provides the opportunity to connect with rural and remote communities and to explore opera’s relevance beyond the traditional opera house. The culminating performance will take place during the Dawson City Music Festival.
2. Edmonton Opera Residency
January 11 – February 12, 2027 | Edmonton, Alberta
During the Edmonton residency, Emerging Artists will engage fully with the company’s artistic and operational activities. Participants can expect paid performance opportunities, including a smaller mainstage role in our production of The Magic Flute, as well as involvement in community engagement initiatives such as Opera Pubs, school tours, and donor events.
Artists will also gain valuable administrative and organizational insight through behind-the-scenes exposure to the inner workings of Edmonton Opera.
3. Yukon Arts Centre Outreach Tours
Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 | Dates to be confirmed
Emerging Artists will participate in two additional outreach trips to the Yukon, engaging with northern communities through performances and workshops in schools, seniors’ residences, and local venues.
