Johann Strauss II’s DIE FLEDERMAUS

November 7, 9, & 12, 2024 | Northern Alberta Jubliee Auditorium

Join us as the season opens in November with Die Fledermaus, a captivating new production sung in German with English dialogue. Witness art imitating life as performers bring to life the iconic relationships of Strauss’ operetta, portraying a local community theatre company coming together to perform their own rendition of Die Fledermaus. A show, within a show.   

Directed by Joel Ivany, conducted by our Music Director, Simon Rivard, this operetta seamlessly combines charm, enchanting waltzes and musical brilliance, showing the talents of the Edmonton Opera Chorus and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. A must-see for both seasoned opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Béla Bartók’s BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE

February 1, 4, 6, & 7, 2025 | Northern Alberta Jubliee Auditorium

In February, we present a profoundly moving production of Bluebeard’s Castle, where love takes centre stage. Originating from the Theatre of Sound in London, UK, this contemporary production tells a love story shadowed by dementia.

Each door Judith opens is a step into her past, exploring her memories and identity.

Directed by Daisy Evans, with a new libretto by Evans, and arrangement by Stephen Higgins, this English-sung opera offers a powerful narrative about the complexities of the human mind, and heart, under the baton of Simon Rivard.

Immerse yourself in the celestial wonders of Aquarius, a breathtaking fusion of opera’s greatest moments inspired by the skies and galaxies. Presented at the Zeidler Dome, in partnership with the Telus World of Science, this unique event promises an unforgettable evening where opera meets the cosmos.  

Mozart’s The Queen of the Night takes on a new meaning against the backdrop of the night skies, the Zeidler Dome’s cutting-edge theatre, boasting up to 10k resolution, will transport you to the outer edges of the universe.

Aquarius is poised to be a spectacular journey of sight and sound, harmonizing music and space in a mesmerizing blend. Conceived by Joel Ivany and conducted by Simon Rivard, this performance, featuring soloists, chamber ensemble, and the Edmonton Opera Chorus, promises to be an incredible experience, inviting you to explore the cosmos through the lens of opera.  


Richard Wagner’s DIE WALKÜRE

Embark on the next chapter of Wagner’s monumental Ring Cycle with Die Walküre continuing the saga introduced in Das Rheingold. This new production, arranged by Jonathan Dove, pushes the boundaries of opera, reaching new heights of operatic innovation in Edmonton.  

In partnership with the Citadel, this production strengthens collaboration within the city, with performances held at the Maclab Theatre. Whether you’re a seasoned Wagner enthusiast or new to the world of the Ring Cycle, Die Walküre, promises to captivate and leave you eagerly anticipating the unfolding of this iconic tale.  

Featuring the Edmonton Opera conducting debut of Russell Braun, this production is a testament to the enduring power of Wagner’s work.

November 8, 2024 - Vocal Prize Concert | Northern Alberta Jubliee Auditorium

We are delighted to host the third year of our esteemed Rumbold Vocal Prize Masterclass and Concert series! In an exciting new format, we are separating the Masterclass and the Vocal Prize Concert from one day, into two enchanting evenings.

Made possible by the generous support of Grace and Arnold Rumbold, the Rumbold Vocal Prize aims to cultivate and showcase emerging opera talent from across Canada. Selected finalists will come to Edmonton for a week full of artistic growth and mentorship. Under the guidance of a team of opera professionals—including performers, directors, and head coaches, and more—the finalists will refine their craft in preparation for the Vocal Prize Concert.

Join us on November 6, 2024, for the Masterclass, where you can witness the finalists receive live feedback and coaching, offering a unique glimpse into the preparation and dedication opera performers.

Then, on November 8, 2024, be captivated by the Vocal Prize Concert, where the finalists will showcase their talents as soloists and in group performances. A distinguished panel of judges will crown the winner of the Vocal Prize Concert, an accolade that marks a significant milestone in the career of these outstanding emerging professional opera singers.
