Classic fairytale gets a high fashion makeover

Enter the vain world of 1950’s haute couture, where appearances are everything and kindness is never in fashion. Mistreated by her wicked stepfather and stepsisters, Cinderella seems destined for a life of misery. But when she meets Prince Ramiro, Cinderella starts to find her own ‘happily ever after’— with a few obstacles along the way, of course.

Mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó plays the humble yet empowered Cinderella, her voice praised by The Globe and Mail as "a burnished joy, able to cut through a full orchestra with clarity and beauty." Edmonton’s Juno Award-winning John Tessier charms as Prince Ramiro, described by the Seattle Times as a "lyrical, soaring tenor".

Set to Rossini’s uplifting bel canto composition, Cinderella brings an evening of laughs, entertainment, and tender romance to the Jubilee stage in a newly designed production.

"It may be an opera, but Edmonton Opera’s new production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Cinderella), which opened at the Jubilee on Saturday, deserves to be the hottest theatrical ticket in town."

"This changed setting stays entirely faithful to the spirit of an opera that is about the vanity and shallowness of appearance."

"The cast is splendid, both in their acting and their singing. Their sense of ensemble is so strong that it is invidious to single out any one performance."

I wholeheartedly recommend attending this production not just for confirmed fans of 'bel canto' in particular or opera in general, but for anyone who enjoys live entertainment. Treat yourself: go see this show."

"There are strong performances musically and dramatically from all the soloists... John Tessier is in fine vocal form with his effortless top range and crisp diction in full display, even tossing off a top C while tying a bow tie."

"...there are dazzling vocal fireworks aplenty in the long finale."
