Bizet’s Carmen opens our Diamond Season. Well beloved as the most famous opera of all, Carmen is known for glorious music and a fearless leading lady. We are thrilled that Montreal’s Rose Naggar-Tremblay will infuse this role with her rich voice and interpretive prowess. She will be joined by Adam Luther and Lester Lynch.

Mozart’s

DON GIOVANNI

NEW ENGLISH LIBRETTO BY JOEL IVANY
February 1 & 3, 2024
Jubilee Auditorium

Enjoy Mozart’s classic Don Giovanni as directed and with a new English libretto by Joel Ivany. This semi-staged opera captivates both seasoned and new audiences. Elliot Madore in the title role is praised from Paris to Berlin to the Metropolitan Opera in New York for his “movie star quality” and “exceptional artistry.” He is joined by a stellar cast, including John Tessier, Miriam Khalil, and Justin Welsh. They will be accompanied by members of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra to bring Mozart’s well known score to life.

This production is in partnership with the National Arts Centre and Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity.

Edmonton Opera is thrilled to present Ayre, a diverse fusion of Arabic, Hebrew, Sardinian, and Sephardic folk melodies and texts by Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov.

Diverse cultures and languages come together through soprano Miriam Khalil’s impressive performance, followed by a unique ensamble of both traditional and electronic instruments.

DAS RHEINGOLD

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN EDMONTON
May 28, 29, 31 & June 1, 2024
Maclab Theatre at The Citadel

Introducing Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle to Edmonton stages for the first time ever! Edmonton Opera presents Das Rheingold, the first opera of the 4 part epic saga in May 2024 to be followed in subsequent seasons by the other three operas. Experience the Jonathan Dove reduced version, defined as “Wagner re-imagined,” critically acclaimed as “imaginatively fresh” and “capturing the mighty essence of Wagner’s masterpiece.” 

This production continues a partnership with The Citadel Theatre bringing opera to all Edmonton audiences by engaging in spaces like the Maclab Theatre.

ANNOUNCING SIMON RIVARD
AS MUSIC DIRECTOR

Welcome Simon Rivard, one of the most sought-after conductors on the Canadian music scene joining Edmonton Opera as the first ever Music Director. He will lead The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at the podium this season. Rivard debuted with the Edmonton Opera in 2022 conducting in La Bohème and Tosca. He is “so excited to be joining the company at this pivotal moment in its history,” which you can hear more about in our season video.

Launching our Diamond Anniversary season, we return to the University of Alberta Botanic Garden in August for Opera al Fresco. In 2022, we hosted the inaugural Rumbold Vocal Prize, thanks to the generosity of Grace and Arnold Rumbold. Their legacy continues providing Edmonton audiences the opportunity to hear the Canadian opera stars of tomorrow as they enter the international stage.
