Featuring the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra

Warm up this winter with Rossini’s feel-good Cinderella (La Cenerentola), a bel canto opera that boasts whimsical composition and dramatically rich singing. Rossini takes the familiar fairytale of Cinderella and adds his own spin to it, replacing the wicked stepmother with a quirky old stepfather, and turning the story into a delightful comedy of mistaken identities.

Among Cinderella’s stellar all-Canadian cast are mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó as Cenerentola and Edmonton’s own John Tessier as Prince Ramiro. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of this opera, we present a newly designed production that infuses 1950’s fashion and glamour into the classic Cinderella story. You are invited to join in the festivities!

RICHARD STRAUSS
ELEKTRA

March 11, 14 & 16, 2017 • Jubilee Auditorium

Sung in German with projected English Translation
Featuring the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra
Alberta Premiere

Conducted by Alexander Prior • Directed by Michael Cavanagh
Costume Design by Deanna Finnman • Scenery Design by Edmonton Opera

Cast: Elizabeth Blancke-Biggs (Elektra), Elizabeth Turnbull (Klytämnestra), Tracy Cantin (Chrysothemis), Geoffrey Sirett (Orest), Daniel Brenna (Aegisth), Giles Tomkins (Orest's tutor), Aidan Ferguson (Overseer), Catherine Daniel (First maid), Whitney Sloan (Second maid), Stephanie Tritchew (Third maid), Laura Albino (Fourth maid), Tanya Roberts (Fifth maid), Aaron Dimoff (Old slave)

Based on an ancient Greek myth, Elektra explores the psychological turmoil of its protagonist as she seeks revenge on her father's killer. The culprit, however, is Elektra's own mother Klytämnestra. As Elektra obsessively plots murder, her dark mind begins to unravel until, in a horrifying climax, Elektra's fragile world shatters completely.

Visionary composer Strauss creates one of opera's most chilling scores in Elektra, which 24-year-old British sensation Alexander Prior conducts in his Edmonton Opera debut. Acclaimed dramatic soprano Elizabeth Blancke-Biggs takes on the demanding role of Elektra, promising a powerful and haunting performance.
