Mezzo-soprano Géraldine Chauvet has transfixed audiences worldwide with her portrayal of the fiery temptress, including at the Verona Arena under the baton of Plácido Domingo.

The Canadian creative team of director Maria Lamont, scenery designer Camellia Koo and costume designer Deanna Finnman, with lighting designer David Fraser, have been tasked with creating a new production of Carmen for Edmonton Opera. Designing a new production doesn't mean re-inventing the wheel though, Koo said.

"This is always a challenge — Carmen audiences come with so many pre-conceived ideas and expectations and past productions they have seen, so our challenge is to not to try to do something different with our version for the sake of trying to be different, but instead trying to find a way to approach the opera in a way that we, as a modern audience today, can relate to it on an emotional level," she said.
