To showcase the artistic diversity of our province, Edmonton Opera brings fine operatic offerings once again to the annual celebration of Alberta Culture Days!
“We enjoy a diverse and vibrant culture in Alberta,” says Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism. “It makes us who we are and provides a high quality of life for Albertans, and Edmonton Opera is an important contributor to that.”
As a cultural hub in Edmonton for over 50 years, Edmonton Opera believes that art brings people together. With Alberta Culture Days as a platform, Edmonton Opera will present opera in an unconventional setting — at Kingsway Mall.
“Each year we stage live opera at the Jubilee Auditorium, which is a huge venue. But what happens when we take opera to the middle of a busy shopping mall?” wonders Tim Yakimec, General Director of Edmonton Opera. “I find that it allows the raw power of the human voice to shine through, and the public discovers a newfound appreciation of opera as an art form.”
Located in the centre court of Kingsway Mall, the event titled ‘Around the World with Edmonton Opera’ will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday October 1, with free activities for all ages including arts and crafts, face painting, and a photo booth. At noon and 1:30 p.m., sopranos Victoria Biel and Whitney Sloan will perform arias in various languages to delight the audience and showcase the inherently multicultural art form that is opera.
