Artists announced for Opera Art Project
The exclusive launch of the Opera Art Project will happen later this month, as the Edmonton Opera and the Alberta Craft Council come together for a new arts venture.
Local artists have created opera-themed fine craft, offering opera patrons a chance to take home memories of the 2012/13 mainstage season performances. The works will be on display and available for purchase for the first time on Sept. 28, prior to the opening of Aida.
Artists involved in the project come mainly from the Edmonton area and offer a wide variety of fine craft.
- Dana Roman (Calgary): musically themed hand-painted and dyed silk scarves
- Margie Davidson (Edmonton): scarves with block print of opera text or music
- Valerie Baber (St. Albert): knitted and crochet scarves and neck pieces influenced by each opera
- Simon Wroot (Calgary): pins and small layered metal pictures inspired by opera scenes and characters
- Meghan Wagg (Edmonton): necklaces, earrings and cufflinks based on the voice box
- Claire Uhlick (Edmonton): earrings, cuffs, cufflinks and individual bracelet charms made from folded and woven opera posters and programs
- Chris Kubash (Edmonton): pyramidal boxes for collectors of programs and opera souvenirs
- JoAnna Lange (Edmonton): brightly covered pottery (plates, bowls, small platters) and opera action figures based on opera characters
- James Lavoie (Edmonton): fused glass plates, coasters and cocktail plates for collectors
After the launch, the craft pieces will be on display and for sale during Aida — Oct. 19, 21, 23 and 25 — at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, and then continue to be available at the opera box office at Tix on the Square.
Images of some of the artists’ work is available on request.
