Edmonton Opera Outreach Visits Fort McMurray

In the past year Edmonton Opera’s Education & Outreach Program has grown quickly and touched thousands of students in Edmonton and surrounding areas. Last weekend the program expanded even further with its first visit to Fort McMurray. The Education team and four Edmonton Opera artists traveled north Saturday, June 2nd to deliver a student master class and an evening performance at the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts.

That afternoon Edmonton Opera artists Irén Bartok, Catherine Daniel, Leanne Regehr, Bertrand Malo and Edmonton Opera CEO Sandra Gajic held a complimentary master class with four Wood Buffalo vocal students. The selected students performed operatic pieces and received feedback from the professionals in front of an audience of their peers and instructors. Later that evening the artists performed various popular arias from Carmen, Lakmé and Così Fan Tutte prior to the HD screening of the Met’s La Traviata.

All events were held in the Proscenium Black Box Theatre of the Centre, connected to Holy Trinity High School. The Centre serves the school and community as a space for Visual and Performing Arts instruction and various cultural events.

Edmonton Opera’s Education & Outreach Program Opera Alive aims to make opera accessible by engaging communities in Edmonton and rural areas through its complimentary online resources, outreach visits and performances.

Edmonton Opera is dedicated to producing world class performances that bring the magic and power of opera to our community. Our purpose and vision is to present opera that excites and inspires – you, the audience; our supporters and partners in the community – individuals, corporate and government. For the last 48 years Edmonton Opera has given voice to opera in the community and throughout northern Alberta. It is the 4th largest opera company in Canada and the oldest, largest, year round opera company in the Prairie Provinces.
