DIY Opera

During our 50th anniversary season, Edmonton Opera launched an exciting new addition to our Opera Alive Education Program: DIY Opera!

Do-It-Yourself Opera will provide resources for your school to participate in the making of a new opera. Through workshops with members of our artistic, production and creative teams we will provide guidance throughout the school year with the goal of presenting the opera at the end of classes. The program will allow students to explore the various elements of opera including libretto writing, composition, production, performing and more. Working closely with teachers, we will tailor the program to fit your students’ needs.

In 2013/14, we worked with Abbott School to create a production called The Laughing River, which was performed in their packed gymnasium to students, family members, EO staff and members of the community. All grade levels were part of the production, and learned about different aspects of producing an opera, including creating props, learning about marketing, and of course, performing and staging.

Thank you to all the schools who submitted an application to be a part of the program in 2013/14. Any questions about the DIY Opera program or other educational oppportunities can be directed to education@edmontonopera.com
